My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I use extraction tools designed to grip and pull the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder. On a 99 Envoy, the ignition cylinder has seen some age by now, so I work carefully and check cylinder condition while I'm in there. Once the piece is out, I can cut a new key on site from your lock's data or by decoding what's left. If the cylinder itself is worn to the point where it won't hold a new key properly, I can handle that too. You won't need a tow just because the key snapped.

What exactly is a remote key, and what does mine do?

Your 1999 Envoy uses a remote that is one unit doing two jobs. There is a key blade that cuts into the ignition and turns it, and inside the key head sits a transponder chip that the vehicle's security system reads every time you start the car. On top of that, the fob body has 4 buttons that communicate wirelessly with the vehicle for functions like locking and unlocking. The CR2032 battery powers those buttons. The transponder chip draws its power from the ignition antenna ring, so that side works without any battery at all. If the blade breaks but the electronics are intact, I can often move the working internals into a new shell instead of replacing everything from scratch.

My GMC is showing a key-not-detected type warning. What does that mean?

First thing: try a fresh CR2032 even if the battery seems okay. A weak cell on this fob can cause inconsistent reads before it dies completely.

If the warning is showing at startup and the engine cranks but immediately stalls, that points to the transponder chip side, not the fob battery. The vehicle's security system read either no chip signal or a chip it didn't recognize, and it shut down fuel delivery. That's a different problem from a dead fob and it needs a proper diagnosis on site.

If the remote buttons just stopped working but the car starts and runs fine, you're dealing with the fob sync or the battery, not a security system fault.

The 99 Envoy is old enough that worn ignition antenna rings and aged receiver modules show up in owner complaints on GM forums. A fresh battery that only fixes things for a day or two usually points to a contact or receiver issue rather than a bad chip. Call me and I can sort out which side is failing before you spend money on parts you might not need.

Can I program a replacement fob for my 1999 Envoy myself at home?

For the remote buttons on this generation, there is an onboard sync procedure that some owners have successfully used at home without any tools. It involves a specific sequence using the door lock switch and ignition cycling. It only syncs the fob's remote functions, not the transponder chip. The transponder side on this vehicle requires professional programming equipment to register a new key to the security system. So if you bought a replacement fob online and just need the lock and unlock buttons to work on an already-programmed key, the onboard method may get you there. If you need a completely new key recognized by the car so it will start and run, that part needs me and the right equipment.

The Envoy starts fine but the fob range dropped to almost nothing. What is going on?

Short range on an otherwise working fob is almost always the CR2032 running low. These cells drop voltage gradually, and the buttons will still click and seem to work up close before they stop reaching across a parking lot. Swap the battery first.

If range stays poor after a fresh CR2032, check that the battery is seated flat against both contacts. A slightly tilted cell gives a weak connection that mimics a dead battery. Beyond that, the receiver module on late 90s GM trucks can develop sensitivity issues with age, and a re-sync after the battery swap sometimes tightens things up. If none of that helps, bring me in and I will test the fob output and the receiver side separately to find where the signal is getting lost.
