2006 GMC Envoy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2006 GMC Envoy use?

It's a remote: a key blade attached to a fob with three buttons. The fob handles your door locks remotely. The blade has a transponder chip inside that talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine either won't start or will start and immediately stall. The fob itself runs on a CR2032 battery, which is easy to replace at any hardware or grocery store.

Q: How does your price compare to the GMC dealer?

Dealers typically bundle parts, programming, and labor into one number, and for a vehicle like this it adds up fast, especially if you're also paying for a tow. We come to you in Old Poway or anywhere in Poway, do the whole job on site, and charge a fraction of what most dealers quote for the same work. Call for exact pricing.

Q: My 2006 Envoy starts and then immediately dies. Could that be a key problem?

Yes, and it's one of the more common things Envoy owners post about on forums. That start-then-stall pattern is a classic sign that the immobilizer saw the key come in but didn't get a valid transponder signal before cutting the engine. It's different from the engine not cranking at all. A few things can cause it.

Q: Can I program a second fob myself so I have a spare?

On the 2006 Envoy, there is an onboard programming sequence for adding a remote fob as long as you already have one working programmed key in hand. It's an ignition-turn procedure that doesn't require any external tools. However, it only works when you're adding to an existing key, not starting from zero. If you're all-keys-lost, that sequence won't work because the immobilizer has nothing to reference. That situation needs a programmer connected to the OBD port to clear and re-enroll.

2006 GMC Envoy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Old Poway is one of those neighborhoods where the weekend starts early. Historic feel, a farmers market, people heading out with boats or fishing gear before most of us have had coffee.

I got a call from a guy who'd lost his only key somewhere between the dock and the parking lot. He'd checked his pockets, retraced his steps, gone back to the boat. Nothing. His 2006 GMC Envoy was sitting in the gravel lot and his plan, as far as he could tell, was to wait until Monday and get it towed to the dealer.

I told him I could be there that afternoon.

When I pulled up, he was sitting on a cooler next to the truck looking at his phone. I got the door open without any drama, decoded the lock, and cut a new key blade to match. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the immobilizer, which clears any previously registered keys and enrolls the new one as the primary. The three-button fob was programmed and tested right there in the gravel.

He watched the whole thing. At one point he said something like, "that's it?" Yeah, that's it.

I cut him a spare on the spot so he wouldn't end up in the same situation again. The truck started on the first try. Total time from door open to running engine was about 45 minutes. The dealer would have been Monday, a tow bill, and a wait. He saved a good chunk and got to drive home that afternoon.

GMC Envoy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does GMC key replacement cost so much?▼

A lot of it comes down to the programming side, not just the hardware. The remote on your 2006 Envoy has a transponder chip inside that has to be enrolled in the immobilizer before the engine will run. It's not a key you can just cut and hand over. It needs a specific programming sequence through the OBD port. Dealers charge for the fob, the cut, the labor, and in some cases a programming fee on top of all that.
