2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call out to Crest, which sits up in the hills east of El Cajon, from a guy who was locked out of his 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe in his own driveway. He had both fobs with him. Neither one was unlocking the doors from outside, and when he finally got in through the manual key slot, the push button on the dash would not start the car. The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right on the center console.
He had already been on the phone with the dealer. They told him to bring it in, said it was probably the antenna module, maybe the body control module, and quoted him a diagnostic fee before they would even look at it. He was not happy about that.
I got there and started from the simplest end. Both fobs had the original CR2032 cells. One tested weak on my meter. I swapped it first. Still no change on range, and the dash warning stayed. So I pulled out the diagnostic scanner and checked what the system was actually seeing.
The vehicle's security system had a stored fault pointing to the interior fob detection antenna, the one that reads the fob when it is inside the cabin for the push-button start. The exterior door antennas were working, which is why the touch-unlock on the handles was intermittent rather than completely dead. Once I confirmed the antenna was the issue and not a fob or programming problem, I cleared the fault, verified the antenna connector was seated, and cycled the system. The fob detection came back clean on the scanner. Start button worked. Door handles worked. Both fobs tested on every function before I closed my kit.
He never needed the dealer. He needed someone to actually read the system on site instead of guessing over the phone.
