Q: My 2021 Santa Fe shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is brand new. What is going on?

A few things can cause this even with a fresh battery. First, check that the CR2032 is seated flat and making solid contact on both sides of the battery tray. A slightly canted battery reads as low or absent to the system. Second, try holding the fob closer to the start button when you push it.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and just have you program it, or does it have to be your fob?

You can, with a caveat. The fob has to be the correct one for a 2021 Santa Fe. If the factory FCC ID on the fob does not match what the vehicle expects, the immobilizer will not register it no matter what tool is used. If you already have one in hand, send me the info before the appointment and I will confirm compatibility. If it is the right fob, I program it.

The call came from Ferry Landing in Coronado. A guy was parked near the waterfront, loading gear into his Santa Fe after a day out, and somewhere between the pier and the parking lot he had lost his only fob.

No spare at home. Push-button start means the car just sits there when the system has nothing to talk to. He said it felt like the car had been completely shut off from the inside.

I was already in the area, so I pulled up inside of 20 minutes.

All-keys-lost on a push-button Santa Fe is not a plug-and-go job. The immobilizer has stored key data that has to be cleared before a new fob will register. You can not just pair a blank fob on top of the old slot. I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, cleared the existing key memory, and ran the registration sequence for the new fob. The system accepted it clean on the first pass.

Then I walked everything: start button, door lock and unlock, the other buttons on the fob, and the passive entry handles. All working. He was back in the car and running in under an hour.

He asked what the dealer would have run him. I told him to call and find out. He did, while I was still packing up. The service advisor quoted him a number that made him go quiet for a second. He said he saved a good chunk, and that is not even counting the tow he would have needed to get it there.
