I got a call from a guy parked near the Torrey Pines office corridors in Del Mar, late enough that most of the other cars in the lot had already cleared out. I pulled up to the lot, verified his ID and ownership, connected my equipment to the OBD port, pulled the security PIN through the proper channel, wiped the lost fob from memory, and registered his new key.
He tested every function in the lot before I left. Handles, start button, the mechanical blade in the door cylinder.
He drove home that night. The dealer was closed and would have required an appointment, a tow, and probably a wait measured in days. He saved a significant amount and didn't lose the car overnight. The VIN is always my first question because it turns a stressful parking lot situation into a job I can prepare for before I even start the van.
