Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a quiet stretch. Most calls out there are straightforward. This one had a wrinkle.
The owner had bought her 2018 Santa Fe used, got one fob with it, always meant to get a spare cut. Months became a year. The fob shell cracked along the seam near the bottom button, and at some point she realized the case was being held together by the key ring. She kept using it anyway.
The day it stopped working entirely, she was parked near the beach access on a weekday afternoon. She tried the emergency blade on the door cylinder, the blade snapped, and she was standing there with a cracked fob body in one hand and a broken blade fragment in the other. Zero working keys.
When I got there, I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first. Then I opened what was left of the fob housing. The internal board and transponder chip were intact. That matters, because if the chip survived, I can work with what's there instead of starting from scratch with a full all-keys-lost reset. I transferred the salvageable components into a new shell, registered it properly through the OBD port, cut two new emergency blades to match the lock, and tested every function before I packed up.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 45 minutes. The dealer had been on her list as a backup option, and she mentioned they'd quoted her significantly more just for one key, not counting labor or the second fob she needed. That conversation didn't come up until she was already back inside her car.
If your fob housing is cracked or damaged but the car was still responding to it recently, don't throw it away. The chip inside is usually fine, and that changes how the job gets done.
