1997 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

It is a fair thing to ask. Scam locksmiths are a real and documented problem in California. The pattern is always the same: a low number over the phone, then a number that doubles or triples when they are standing next to your car. Some people have been quoted one price and handed a bill three or four times higher with no explanation. EZ Car Keyz gives you a firm price on the phone before anyone drives anywhere.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The replacement remote head key gets cut to your vehicle and the remote portion is programmed and tested on site. Lock, unlock, every function, before I hand it over. I have heard of people paying a lot of money for a key that barely worked because the blade was cut sloppy or the remote was never properly set up. That does not happen here. I do not leave until everything works the way it should.

Q: My 1997 Tiburon remote stopped working but the key still starts the car fine. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On this generation Tiburon, the remote transmitter and the ignition key function are separate from each other in terms of what can fail. If the car starts and runs normally but the remote lock and unlock are dead, the issue is isolated to the transmitter side of the remote head key. That can be a dead battery in the fob, corroded contacts inside the housing, or a failed transmitter. Start by checking the battery in the fob portion.

Q: Can I find a used remote head key for a 1997 Tiburon online and just use that?

You can find them, but a used fob from an online listing will not work out of the box. The remote portion needs to be programmed to your specific vehicle before it will communicate with the receiver in your car. Buying a used fob and skipping that step gets you a key blade that may or may not be cut right and a remote that does nothing. You still need the programming done.

1997 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked in the overflow lot off Seacoast Drive, a few blocks from the water. Her kid was running a fever and she was trying to get home. The 1997 Tiburon just sat there. The remote wasn't responding, and she wasn't sure if the key itself was the problem or something else.

She called me and I was about twenty minutes out.

When I got there, I could see the fob housing had some corrosion around the battery contact. These early remote head keys on the Tiburon have a pretty compact housing, and when moisture gets into the seam, the battery contact oxidizes and the transmitter stops sending. The key blade itself was fine. The ignition turned, the car would crank. The remote portion was just dead.

I swapped the fob, cut a replacement blade to match, tested the locks, and walked her through what to do if the remote ever goes quiet on her again before she's stuck somewhere. The whole thing was maybe thirty-five minutes.

The dealer route on a car this age often means a parts search, a wait, and a bill that doesn't reflect how simple the actual fix was. She drove home, got the kid medicated, and the car was sorted before dark. That's the job.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Hyundai vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is a California BSIS licensed locksmith company (LCO#6792), fully insured, and a NASTF Vehicle Security Professional. Working on a 1997 Tiburon key system does not require the same level of factory credentialing as a newer push-to-start vehicle, but being properly licensed matters regardless of the car's age. You can verify the license through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.
