2006 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2006 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The call came from a body shop out in Alpine, near the Harbison Canyon side. They had a 2006 Tiburon that came in for fender work, and somewhere in the process a key situation turned into a bigger headache.

Another locksmith had already been out. He got an error during the programming sequence, and instead of working through it, he told the shop the immobilizer module was bad and walked. The car was sitting there, no working key, and the shop was stuck between a flatbed to the dealer and trying someone else.

They called me.

When I got there and pulled up the diagnostic side of things, the module was not bad. It was in a fault state from the interrupted programming attempt. A bad sequence or a power hiccup mid-write can do that. The module locks itself and stops accepting new key registration entirely, which looks like hardware failure if you do not know what you are looking at.

I had the bench tooling with me. When OBD communication was blocked by the fault state, I pulled the module and read the data directly from the chip. Cleared the fault, rebuilt the key registration from a clean state, and ran the new remote head key through the full process. The system accepted it on the first attempt after the reset.

The shop foreman had been watching the whole thing, half expecting me to come back with the same bad news. When the key started the car and the remote buttons responded, he just nodded slowly like he was revising something in his head.

About 80 minutes total including the module work. The dealer route would have been a flatbed, a multi-day wait, and a bill that made this look like a rounding error.
