1999 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key, and why does it matter for my 1999 Tiburon?

A remote head key is a single unit where the key blade, the transponder chip, and the remote buttons are all built into one piece. The blade cuts your locks and ignition mechanically. The chip inside talks to the immobilizer so the engine will actually run. The remote portion handles lock and unlock functions. All three parts have to work together.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a key for a 1999 Tiburon?

For a late-90s Hyundai like this, the job is not a simple plug-into-OBD situation. I use professional-grade immobilizer programming equipment that can work directly with the module on these older systems. For cases like the one in Blossom Valley, where a prior failed attempt had blocked normal communication, I also use bench tools that let me read and rewrite the immobilizer data at the chip level without needing the car's network to cooperate.

Q: My 1999 Tiburon cranks fine but immediately stalls every time I try to start it. Is that the key?

That pattern, cranks and immediately stalls, points directly at the vehicle security system not recognizing the key's transponder chip. It is one of the most recognizable symptoms on these older Hyundais when the immobilizer is active and rejecting the key signal. It is not a fuel pump problem, not a relay, not a sensor. The engine fires because the mechanical side is fine. It kills itself because the security system cuts it off.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made for a 1999 Tiburon if I still have one working key?

Yes, and it is the easier of the two scenarios. Having a working key means the immobilizer is in a known good state and normal communication is available. I can cut a replacement blade to match your existing key, register the new key's chip to the system, and verify the remote functions. You leave with two working keys instead of one, which matters because all-keys-lost on a vehicle this age takes longer and costs more.

1999 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop in Blossom Valley called me about a 1999 Tiburon that had been sitting in their lot for a few days. They had hired another locksmith after a fender repair left the car needing a new key. That locksmith ran into trouble mid-programming, got an error, and walked. He told the shop the immobilizer module was probably bad. The shop called me.

When I got there, the car was exactly as he left it. OBD communication to the immobilizer was blocked, which is what happens when a failed programming sequence writes partial data and the module goes into a fault state. The other guy was not wrong that something was wrong. He just did not have the tools to go further.

I pulled the module and went to bench. Reading the data directly off the chip let me see what state it was actually in, clear the fault, and rebuild the key registration from a clean slate. Once the module was back in and the system was talking again, I registered the new key. First attempt after the reset, it took.

The shop foreman watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When the Tiburon started and idled like nothing happened, he just nodded slowly and said he was not expecting that to work today.

It took around 80 minutes including the module pull and reinstall. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have been a good chunk more. I carry bench tools for exactly this situation, because a previous bad attempt can leave a car worse off than a simple all-keys-lost, and you need the right equipment to sort it out.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get burned?▼

Three things. First, a real business name, a verifiable California BSIS license number they can give you on the phone, and actual Google reviews with history. Scam operations use a rotating pile of fake names and numbers that all route to the same call center. Second, ask for a firm quote for your specific year and model before anyone drives out. If they refuse to give you a number until they see the car, that is not a good sign.
