2002 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what makes it different from a regular car key?

A remote head key is a single unit where the remote buttons are molded into the key head itself rather than sitting on a separate fob. Your 2002 Tiburon uses this style. Inside that plastic head is a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the ignition. If the chip is not recognized, the engine either will not start or will start and immediately stall. The remote portion handles lock and unlock functions.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a key for a 2002 Hyundai Tiburon?

Professional immobilizer programming tools that communicate through the diagnostic port. For a 2002 Tiburon the process is more accessible than on newer Hyundai models, which require additional steps to pull security data before programming can begin. The 2002 is older enough that the job does not involve the locked-down gateway access that later vehicles require. I also carry key blank inventory and cutting equipment in the van, so the blade is cut on site.

Q: My 2002 Tiburon starts and immediately shuts off. Is that the key or something else?

Start-and-stall on this generation points to the immobilizer not recognizing the key. It means the ignition cylinder accepted the blade, but the transponder signal either was not read or was not matched to the vehicle's security system. That can happen with a damaged chip inside the key head, a key that was never properly programmed, or in rarer cases a fault in the immobilizer module itself. Before assuming the module is bad, rule out the key.

Q: The lock and unlock buttons on my Tiburon remote head key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The remote portion of a remote head key is separate from the transponder function. If the car still starts normally, the chip is fine. Dead remote buttons are often a battery issue first. Check that before assuming the worst. If a fresh battery does not bring it back, the remote receiver in the vehicle or the key's internal circuitry could be the problem.

2002 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the shops in Downtown Santee when the call came in. A woman had snapped the head of her key off in her hand, not at the lock, just from years of keychain stress on that plastic housing. The blade was still sitting in her ignition, intact, and the car was locked. Classic.

She found me through Google and called before she even tried anything else, which was the right move. She did not try to fish the blade out herself.

I got the blade out clean, no damage to the cylinder. Then I looked at the broken housing she handed me. The chip inside was still intact, which mattered. I transferred the chip into a new remote head key housing, cut the blade to match her vehicle, and confirmed the remote functions were working before I handed it back.

The whole stop took under half an hour. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a multi-day wait just to order the part. I was already done and back on the road before that wait would have even started.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check. First, search the business name against California's BSIS license lookup. Every legitimate locksmith company in the state has a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license number they can give you over the phone without hesitation. Second, ask for a firm quote for your specific vehicle before anyone drives out. A real tech knows what a 2002 Tiburon key job involves and can give you a number.
