I was parked on a side street near La Mesa Village on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. A woman had a 2007 Lincoln MKX and a key that had gone mostly quiet. The lock and unlock buttons stopped responding about a week before. She had been walking around the car and using the door handle to get in, writing it off as a dead battery she kept forgetting to swap. Then the panic button stopped working too, and she decided it was time to call someone.

When I got there, the first thing I did was pull the key apart and check the CR2032. It measured low, not fully dead, just weak enough that the radio portion of the key had given up. The transponder circuit draws less power and held on longer. New battery, reassembled, and all five buttons came back immediately. Locks, unlock, panic, the whole thing.
She mentioned she had already called the dealer. They quoted her a replacement key and programming, which would have meant leaving the car with them for a day or two and paying for parts she did not need. The battery cost less than two dollars. The rest of what she paid was for me driving out and diagnosing it correctly instead of selling her something.
That is the job sometimes. Not every call is a two-hour programming session. Some of them are knowing what to check first.
