2013 Lincoln MKX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the Lincoln dealer for this?

On a 2013 MKX, yes, and the gap is real. Dealers split the job into parts: fob cost, programming labor, blade cutting. Each line item adds up. A mobile locksmith rolls to your location and handles everything in one shot. No tow fee if all keys are lost, no waiting for a service appointment, no itemized surprises at pickup. The savings aren't marginal.

Q: Does your price include cutting the emergency blade and programming?

Yes, all of it. The fob, the emergency blade cut to your vehicle, the programming through the OBD port, syncing all the remote functions, and a full button test before I leave. The blade cutting is the one that catches people at the dealer. It's treated as a separate line item there, sometimes a significant one. With us it's part of the job, not an add-on.

Q: My 2013 MKX fob works sometimes and fails other times. Is the fob dying or is something wrong with the car?

Intermittent behavior like that usually points to one of three things: the CR2032 battery is running low, the battery contacts inside the fob have a slight corrosion or seating issue, or the fob itself is failing. Start with the battery. A CR2032 in a smart key fob doesn't always give clean signals as it drains. It can test at an acceptable voltage on a meter but still cause range and recognition issues under load.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 MKX. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2013 MKX Intelligent Access system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. That type of onboard relearn exists on older bladed key systems where the key goes into an ignition cylinder. A smart key on this vehicle has to be paired through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment. The fob you bought online is just hardware until it's programmed. Bring it to me and I can pair it on site.

2013 Lincoln MKX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A third-shift security guard in Downtown La Mesa had his only MKX fob die on him at home late one night. Car was parked in the driveway, and without a recognized fob the push-button start wasn't doing anything. He'd already looked up towing options before he called me. I told him to stay where he was.

When I pulled up, I had him show me the fob first. He'd noticed the key-not-detected warning a few times over the past week and figured it would sort itself out. It didn't. Fresh CR2032 on the spot confirmed the fob itself was done, not just the battery.

I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Lincoln smart key system. The process erases every previously paired fob the vehicle had on record and registers the new ones fresh. His new five-button Intelligent Access fob was paired and the embedded emergency blade was cut to the vehicle. I walked every button, tested the trunk release, confirmed the push-button start recognized the fob from inside the cabin, and we were done.

He asked what the dealer would have said. I told him honestly: they'd have had him tow it in, scheduled it for the next available slot, and billed him in pieces. He'd already burned an hour trying to figure out his options. The whole job at his driveway took less time than the tow would have.

Lincoln MKX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2013 Lincoln MKX smart key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the number, but the short version is: way less than the dealer route. Lincoln dealers tend to break this job into multiple line items. The fob itself, a separate programming charge, and if you need the emergency blade cut, that's often another charge on top. By the time it's all added up, you're paying a significant amount more than what we charge for the whole job done at your location.
