A few things stack on top of each other. The fob itself carries a programmed transponder chip that the immobilizer has to recognize before the engine will run. That chip has to be enrolled to your specific vehicle through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment. There is no shortcut, no ignition-turn sequence, no button trick. The key blade also has to be cut to your vehicle's lock profile, which requires either pulling the key code from a database or decoding the lock directly.

On top of that, dealers charge for parts, labor, programming time, and sometimes a key code lookup fee as a separate line item. All of that together is why a dealer quote on a 2012 MKX smart key can land in uncomfortable territory fast.

No. The 2012 MKX smart key does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There is no button combination, no ignition-cycling trick that enrolls a new fob. That kind of onboard relearn exists on some older vehicles with basic transponder keys, but it does not apply here.

The fob you bought online may be the correct one for your vehicle, and that is fine. You just still need someone with the right diagnostic equipment to pair it through the OBD port. Bring the fob, we do the rest.

My 2012 MKX shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What is going on?

This one comes up a lot on these vehicles, and it is not always the fob.

First thing to check is whether the main battery took a hit. If the vehicle sat for a while, ran the battery low, or got jump-started recently, the body control module can lose its footing and start rejecting fobs it was previously fine with. A full power reset sometimes clears it. A proper main battery load test is the first step before assuming anything is wrong with the key itself.

Second, even a brand-new CR2032 can cause problems if it is not seated flush. The battery contacts in these fobs are light, and if the cell is even slightly cocked in the tray, you get intermittent reads that look like a bigger failure.

If the reset does not fix it and the battery is seated correctly, then you are into a programming or hardware diagnosis. That is where I come in.
