In Bostonia, just off the main stretch in El Cajon, a restaurant owner called me about his 2018 Lincoln MKX. He had bought it used with a single fob, told himself he would get a spare eventually, and then dropped that one fob on concrete coming out of work late. Cut a fresh emergency blade from a door lock decode, verified the fob still communicated correctly with the vehicle, and we were done in under 45 minutes.
He went from zero functioning keys to a fully working fob plus the emergency blade, without losing his existing programming. If he had thrown the pieces away before calling, the job would have taken longer and cost more. The dealer was not even a real option he was considering at that point. He just needed someone who could show up in Bostonia and actually solve it.
The broken pieces are worth keeping.
