I was parked off Bay Marina Drive in National City, next to a guy who had already been sitting with his 2010 MKX for about an hour before he called me.
He had one key left, a worn remote head key with a crack running across the back cover. The remote still worked, barely, maybe fifteen feet of range on a good day. I pulled up, verified ownership on site, and got to work at the hood. Decoded the blade profile from the existing key, cut a new blade to match. Then connected to the OBD port and worked through the immobilizer programming sequence. These have a security access timer built into the process. You do not rush it. You let the system do what it does, watch the theft indicator on the dash, and wait for the green light, so to speak.
Once the new key was registered and the old one confirmed still active, I ran the full test. Not just a start. I walked the car, tested lock and unlock from distance, tested the trunk release, ran three consecutive starts while watching the theft light behavior on the dash. On a properly programmed key, that light comes on briefly when you turn the ignition and then goes off cleanly. A key that did not take right shows it.
Everything confirmed clean. He had a working spare in his hand before I left the lot.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just for parts. He did not end up going that route.
