I got a call from a guy parked near the water down in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach. He had a 2014 Lincoln MKX and zero working keys. Not a dead fob, not a weak battery. Zero keys. He had bought the car used a few months back and had been driving around on the one fob the previous owner handed him. That fob finally gave out, and now he was sitting in a parking lot with a push-button start vehicle that would not wake up.
He had already called the dealer. They told him it was a tow-in job, minimum one to two days in the shop, and he would need to be there in person to prove ownership before they would touch the immobilizer. He had a kid in the back seat and nowhere to go.
All-keys-lost on a push-button Lincoln like this is not a grab-a-blank-and-cut job. The vehicle security system has to be accessed through the diagnostic port, old fob data has to be cleared, and each new fob has to be registered to the module while the system runs through its timed enrollment sequence. I also had to decode the door lock mechanically to get the correct blade cut for the emergency insert key, because with zero fobs in the system, that insert is your fallback if anything goes wrong mid-programming.
I worked on the hood of my van while he stood outside watching. The enrollment sequence on these has a built-in wait period you cannot rush. I told him that upfront so he was not standing there wondering why I was just staring at a tablet.
When the second fob registered and the engine turned over on button press, he just nodded slowly like he had been holding his breath the whole time.
He got two programmed fobs and a cut emergency insert. He did not get a tow bill, a two-day wait, or a dealer upsell. And I was done and pulling out of that lot in under an hour.
