I was out in Shadowridge on a Wednesday night when the call came in from a parking garage in Vista. 10:30pm, a night janitor, and he had lost his only key to a 2009 Town Car. He was already thinking about tow trucks. He did not know what a VIN was, he did not have his registration in front of him, and the car was not going anywhere.
I slowed him down on the phone. Told him to walk to the driver's side of the car and look through the windshield at the base of the glass near the dash. He found the VIN. Then I asked if he had an insurance app on his phone. He did. His registration was right there.
That was all I needed to prep before I left. With the VIN confirmed, I already knew what blank I needed, and I had it.
When I pulled into the garage, he was sitting on a concrete barrier next to the car. Big Lincoln, all alone under the fluorescent lights. I laid the new key out on the hood, cut the blade to his vehicle, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port. That wipes any previously registered key data from the system and lets you start fresh with new keys. Two keys programmed and tested, both starting the car, both remotes cycling the locks. Done under the garage lights in under an hour.
He drove home that night. The tow truck never got called. And the dealer, which was closed anyway, would have been a very different conversation in the morning.
