Over in the Las Americas Area, close to the San Ysidro border crossing, I got a call from a guy whose 2011 Lincoln Town Car key had snapped inside the door lock. Not bent, not stuck -- broken clean, with half the blade still seated in the cylinder.

I brought my Lishi pick and extractor for that specific keyway. Worked the fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces, no scratches, nothing disturbed. Once the broken piece was out, I decoded the lock right there by reading each wafer position.

From that decode I cut two fresh remote head keys on site. Both blades matched the lock perfectly. Then came the programming side -- these Town Cars run the immobilizer system that requires OBD access and, on an all-keys-lost situation, a mandatory timed security cycle before the system accepts new keys. I connected, ran through the security wait, and registered both keys. First crank, it fired right up.

He stood there for a second looking at the door lock like he expected it to still be broken. No drilling, no replacement cylinder, no tow to a dealer, no appointment. He drove away in the same car he came with, looking exactly the same as before I touched it.

The other locksmith's drill-first approach would have been a permanent, irreversible change to his car. Extraction and decode should always be the first attempt.
