2012 Nissan Quest
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long should a replacement Intelligent Key last on a 2012 Quest?

A properly programmed key should last as long as the original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. The most common failure point on these fobs over time is the battery contact, not the electronics. The CR2032 is easy to swap, but if the contacts get slightly bent from repeated battery changes, you can end up with intermittent behavior that looks like a bigger problem.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after programming?

Call me. Every key I make is covered under warranty. If it loses start function or remote function, or throws a key warning on the dash, I come back and sort it out. Worth knowing on the Quest specifically: owners have reported situations where lock and unlock still work fine but the car shows a key-not-detected warning on startup. That's not always a dead fob.

Q: I have one working key for my 2012 Quest. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. The reason is practical: adding a second key while one working key exists is a faster, simpler job than all-keys-lost. When all keys are gone, the procedure involves wiping the vehicle's key memory entirely before registering new ones, which adds time and complexity. Quest owners on the forums who waited until they lost their only key paid more and waited longer.

Q: The sliding door button on my Quest fob stopped working but everything else is fine. Is the fob going bad?

Not necessarily. The 2012 Quest fob has six buttons, and individual button contacts can wear out without affecting the rest of the fob's functions. If lock, unlock, and start detection all still work, the fob electronics are fine. A worn contact on one button is a mechanical issue inside the case, not a programming or transponder problem.

2012 Nissan Quest Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a smog check station over in Kearny Mesa. Not the typical lockout. A Quest owner had already tried using another locksmith for a key replacement, the car battery sagged mid-programming, and the immobilizer went into a fault state. The other tech packed up and left.

When I pulled in, the owner was sitting on the curb outside the smog bay looking like he'd had a full day of bad news. The Quest wouldn't start, the dash was showing a key warning, and nobody had explained to him what actually happened.

I put my jump pack on the battery before touching anything else. That's the step that gets skipped when people are rushing. Power interruption during a security handshake can push the module into a lockout condition, and trying to reprogram on a weak battery just repeats the problem. Once I had stable voltage, I cleared the fault state through the OBD port and ran a clean programming sequence from the beginning. The new fob paired on the first attempt.

Total time was about an hour and a half, longer than a normal Quest job. The extra time was all recovery and diagnosis, not programming. I walked the smog shop through what had gone wrong so they'd recognize the signs if they saw it again.

The owner had been quoted a flatbed to the dealer as his only other option. He saved a good chunk by the time we were done, and he drove out of that smog bay under his own power.

Nissan Quest Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2012 Quest?▼

For the Quest's Intelligent Key system, I'm careful about what I bring to the job. Aftermarket fobs vary a lot in quality, and the ones that come up cheap online sometimes have frequency or transponder tolerances that are slightly off spec. That can mean a fob that programs once and then starts dropping signal within a few weeks. I supply keys I'm confident putting a warranty behind, verified to match the factory ID and frequency for this vehicle.
