2013 Nissan Quest
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The Intelligent Key fob your 2013 Quest uses communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's immobilizer. It's not just a remote. The fob contains a transponder that has to be registered to your specific vehicle through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment. The vehicle won't start without a recognized fob present, no matter how good the key blade cut is. A hardware store copies the physical blade only. It has no way to enroll a transponder.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a 2013 Quest Intelligent Key?

For the Quest, the programming side runs through the OBD port using professional-grade key programming equipment. I carry multiple platforms so I'm not stuck if one has a hiccup on a particular vehicle. The fob also has a built-in emergency blade for mechanical entry, and I carry the tooling to cut and decode that on site.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2013 Quest. Can you still make a replacement, or does it have to go to a dealer?

All-keys-lost is a regular job on these. It takes longer than adding a spare because the immobilizer has to be reset before any new fob can be registered, and that reset process has a timed sequence built into it. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour on site. The dealer will do this too, but they need the vehicle at their location, which usually means a tow since it won't start. I come to the car.

Q: My 2013 Quest Intelligent Key fob works in the morning but acts dead in the afternoon. What's going on?

This is a known pattern on Intelligent Key systems and it usually comes down to one of three things. Battery voltage that drops under load. A cell can measure fine at rest and still fail when the RF circuit draws current, especially in heat. California afternoons in Rancho Santa Fe can get warm enough to accelerate that. Intermittent contact inside the fob.

2013 Nissan Quest Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Rancho Santa Fe, over at The Bridges, on a Saturday afternoon. She was coordinating an event, her 2013 Quest was blocking a loading area in the parking lot, and her Intelligent Key had stopped being recognized by the vehicle. Push-button start was giving her nothing. Two hours until she needed that space clear.

I was there in under 30 minutes.

First thing I did was pull the key apart and check the battery. The CR2032 inside looked fine, but the positive contact had a slight deflection from someone prying the case open before. Enough to make intermittent contact. I seated a fresh cell, straightened the contact, and tested the fob range at all four door handles before I even touched the OBD port.

It came back. Touch unlock on both front handles, liftgate release, start button responding normally. I walked the whole vehicle before I called it done.

She moved the Quest out of the loading zone with an hour to spare. The dealer had already told her it would be two to three days for an appointment and she'd need a tow since the car "wouldn't start." She saved a good chunk just by having someone come to her.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get taken advantage of?▼

A few red flags that come up constantly. If they won't give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that's a problem. If the opening quote is suspiciously low and they say they'll figure out the total when they arrive, that's a bait-and-switch. If you search the business name and find no real address, no consistent reviews, or a generic stock-photo listing, keep looking.
