I was parked on Main Street in Downtown Ramona when the call came in. The owner of a 2008 Rogue said her Intelligent Key fob had just stopped working overnight, no warning, no event she could point to. She could still get in using the emergency metal key hidden inside the fob, but the start button wouldn't recognize the fob and the car wouldn't run.
When I got there she handed me the fob and I could already feel it had been dropped more than once. The shell had a hairline crack along the seam near the battery cover.
I popped it open on the hood. The CR2032 read low on the tester, but the real problem was the battery contact on the positive side. The crack in the shell had let the case flex just enough over time that the contact had a slight bow in it. The battery was making intermittent contact, which on a Nissan Intelligent Key system is enough to make the car behave like there's no key present at all. The vehicle security system sees a signal it can't read cleanly and just rejects it.
I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and snapped a replacement shell around the original circuit board. Walked every door handle, tested touch-unlock on both front doors, and held the fob at varying distances from the start button to confirm the read was clean. Everything came back solid.
She had already called the dealer before reaching me. They told her to bring it in, said they'd need to diagnose it, and gave her no same-day availability. She got a working key on her lunch break in Downtown Ramona instead. The dealer comparison wasn't even the point by then. She just wanted her afternoon back.
