My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for us. We carry the tools to pull a broken key blade from a Nissan ignition cylinder without tearing the cylinder apart. The thing to know on the 2015 Rogue is that once a blade snaps inside, the internal wafers can take damage from the break or from someone trying to fish it out with the wrong tool. Getting the fragment out is step one. After that, we assess the cylinder. If it's still good, we cut a new key blade to your vehicle and re-register the Intelligent Key fob. If the cylinder got chewed up, we deal with that on site too. Either way, you're not calling a tow truck.

What exactly is a smart key and what's inside my 2015 Rogue fob?

Your 2015 Rogue uses what Nissan calls an Intelligent Key. The fob has four buttons and contains a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the engine to start. There's also a mechanical key blade tucked inside the fob body for situations where the battery dies or the electronic system needs a backup entry point.

If the blade breaks but the electronics are still intact, we can often move the chip and internals into a new fob shell instead of replacing everything. If the whole fob is gone or damaged beyond that, we cut a new blade and program a new fob on site. The factory fob ID for this vehicle is printed on the back of the fob if you ever need to reference it for ordering.

My Nissan says key not detected. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2032 battery. Seriously, do this before anything else. Rogue owners on the forums report that the battery can fade faster than expected, and the symptom isn't always a completely dead fob. It shows up as a key-not-detected warning, inconsistent door handle response, or a start button that works one attempt and hesitates the next.

If you have a fresh battery in and still get the warning, try this: pull the mechanical blade out of the fob and use it to get in the door, then hold the fob body directly against the start button while pressing the brake pedal. The fob has a low-frequency backup signal that works at close range even when the battery is nearly depleted. That's your test. If the car starts that way, it's still a battery or contact issue.

If neither of those gets you anywhere, the problem could be the fob itself, the immobilizer antenna ring around the start button, or a car battery that's dropped low enough to affect the security system's ability to read the key. That's when you call me.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 Rogue. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2015 Rogue Intelligent Key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that does it on a smart key vehicle like this. That style of self-programming only exists on older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder.

The fob you bought online isn't useless, but it needs to be paired to your specific vehicle through the diagnostic port. If you bring it when you call me, I can program it on site.

Question 5

One door handle stopped triggering the touch unlock. The other handles work fine. Is the fob going bad?

Almost certainly not the fob. If the other handles are responding and the start button sees the key without issue, the fob is doing its job. This complaint comes up on the 2014-2016 Rogue range fairly often. Isolated touch-unlock failure on one handle usually points to the capacitive sensor in that specific handle or the wiring behind it, not the key or the immobilizer system.

Clean the handle area and retest. If it stays isolated to that one door, you're in door-hardware territory. Worth diagnosing before anyone starts talking about a new fob.
