We use OEM-spec fobs that are verified to match the factory FCC ID and frequency for this vehicle. On the Intelligent Key system, this matters more than people expect. Aftermarket fobs sourced from online marketplaces vary a lot in quality, and some of them have communication issues that only show up after programming, not before. Nissan dealers typically won't program a fob they didn't sell, so if you buy one online and then need a dealer to pair it, you may hit a wall. We supply the key, cut it, program it, and warranty the whole job. We're not going to bring a part we don't trust to a job we're putting our name on.

How long should a replacement Intelligent Key last on a 2011 Rogue?

A properly programmed key should give you years of reliable use. The programming itself doesn't wear out or degrade. What actually fails on these fobs over time is the CR2032 battery, the battery contacts, or the plastic housing cracking from being dropped. If the shell breaks, the electronics can often be moved into a new case without reprogramming, which is a much smaller job than a full replacement. The one thing to watch on this generation of Intelligent Key is the battery contact tension. If someone pried the fob open roughly to swap the battery, the contacts can get slightly bent, and the battery sits loose enough to cause intermittent issues without looking obviously wrong.

What if the new key starts acting up a few weeks after you program it?

That said, it's worth knowing what the symptoms actually mean on this system. If the fob stops being detected for starting but lock and unlock still work, those two functions run on different signals, so they can fail independently. A key-not-detected warning at startup while the remote functions still work usually points to a battery or contact issue inside the fob, not a programming problem. If lock, unlock, and start all stop at once, that's a different conversation and we'll diagnose it on site. I don't charge a return visit to fix something I programmed.

My 2011 Rogue shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob still locks and unlocks the doors. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on this generation and it confuses people because the fob seems to be working fine from the outside. Here's what's happening: the remote lock and unlock functions transmit on a different signal than the Intelligent Key system uses to detect the fob for starting. So a weak battery or a slightly degraded fob can still have enough power to throw a radio signal at the doors but not enough to register properly with the push-button start system.

First thing to do is replace the CR2032, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and close the fob completely. If the warning clears and start works again, you found it. If the warning keeps coming back even with a fresh battery, the fob itself may need to be looked at, or there's something going on with the antenna ring around the start button. I bought a used fob online that matches my 2011 Rogue. Can I program it myself?

No. The Intelligent Key system on this vehicle requires a programmer connected to the OBD port to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that works for this system. That DIY relearn trick exists on some older Nissan models with a remote head key in an ignition cylinder, but not here. If you bought a fob online, it still needs a tech with the right equipment to pair it to your car. The fob being the correct type is just the starting point. It also needs to be enrolled into your vehicle's system before it does anything.
