I got a call from a guy in Eucalyptus Hills, up in Lakeside. He had parked his 1999 Porsche 911 in an underground garage near his office, and the flip key remote had already been flaky for a week.
Then it stopped working entirely. He could not get into the car without fishing out the mechanical insert blade, and once inside, the car threw a key-not-detected warning on the dash. It cranked but would not stay running.
The tow quote he got assumed the car would roll out to street level. It would not, because the lower sublevel had a tight spiral ramp with a clearance that ruled out any flatbed. The dealer told him to get the car to them first. That was not happening.
I drove my van to the garage entrance, grabbed my tools, and walked down. The 996 era is one I know well. The flip key on these has the remote electronics and the transponder chip sharing the same housing, but they are two separate failure points. I diagnosed the transponder side through the OBD port, confirmed the immobilizer was not recognizing the key at all, and got a replacement flip key cut and programmed on site. Tested ignition, tested the remote functions, walked around the car.
The whole job happened on sublevel 2. His car never moved. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and the dealer quote had assumed he could get the car to them, which he could not.
