🔧 PRO TIP
The 2013 Porsche 911 uses a car-shaped smart fob that looks totally proprietary, but the underlying key system is something a properly equipped mobile locksmith handles regularly. The fob takes a CR2032. Before you assume a programming failure or a dead module, swap that battery first and reseat it firmly against the contacts. A weak cell on these fobs can produce a key-not-detected warning, short range, and inconsistent push-to-start response that all look like something worse. The other thing owners miss: Porsche's key learning process requires the correct security access and PIN calculation pulled from the immobilizer. A partially programmed key will crank the engine and then cut it dead within a couple seconds. That's not a module problem. That's an incomplete write. The fob has to be fully enrolled, not just seen by the system.

2013 Porsche 911 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Sunday morning from a guy parked near Bressi Ranch, not far from one of those busy brunch spots off Palomar Airport Road. Retired airline captain, very calm, very precise about what had already gone wrong. He'd already paid another locksmith for a replacement smart key on his 2013 Porsche 911. The key had never worked right. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, and die. The previous tech told him the keyless entry and start module was bad and walked away from the job.

I've seen that exact symptom before. Engine cranks, fires briefly, then the immobilizer cuts fuel. It almost always means the key was not fully learned by the system. The fob might be recognized enough to allow cranking, but if the security handshake didn't complete correctly during programming, the immobilizer does its job and shuts everything down. The module was fine.

I connected through the OBD port, cleared the corrupted key data from the failed attempt, read fresh data from the immobilizer, calculated the correct security codes, and wrote a clean enrollment to a new fob. All five buttons confirmed active. Push-to-start came up clean with no fuel cutoff on the second or third start cycle. I showed him the confirmation screen so he wasn't just taking my word for it.

He'd already lost money to the first locksmith. I couldn't fix that part. What I could do was make sure he left with a key that actually worked, programmed correctly, same parking lot, no tow truck involved. He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote he'd gotten, even after everything he'd already been through.

Porsche 911 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 Porsche 911?
Call a mobile locksmith who actually specializes in European vehicles rather than towing it to the dealer. All-keys-lost on a Porsche is not a simple job, but it is a standard one for a tech with the right equipment. The dealer process adds towing costs, a service write-up, scheduling delays, and their labor rate on top of the key cost itself. We do the same work on site, in the parking lot or your driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer route runs. One thing worth knowing: if you are doing all-keys-lost, do two keys in the same session. The security access and PIN calculation work is done once regardless of how many fobs you add. Getting a second key cut and programmed at the same time costs far less than calling us back for a second appointment later.
Can you delete lost or stolen keys from my Porsche so they no longer work?
Does my 2013 Porsche 911 key fob have a hidden emergency blade inside it?
My 2013 Porsche 911 shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?
I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Porsche 911. Can I program it myself?
