2000 Porsche 911
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2000 Porsche 911 Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Richland in San Marcos, I got a call about a 2000 Porsche 911 that needed a spare key cut and programmed. The owner had one working key and didn't want to be caught out with a car this age and no backup.

What I appreciated was that she had everything ready before I arrived: the VIN, her ID, and the original key sitting on the kitchen counter. That combination, working key plus VIN plus proof of ownership, is the best possible starting point on a job like this. It means I'm adding a key to a system that's already talking, not trying to resurrect one that's gone silent.

I pulled up, verified ownership, and got to work. The 996 has its own personality when it comes to key programming. The immobilizer system on this generation isn't complicated by modern standards, but it does need the right equipment to communicate with it properly. I had the correct blank prepped from the van, programmed the transponder chip to the car, verified the remote functions were responding, and did a full test: lock, unlock, and a couple of ignition cycles to confirm the engine wasn't fighting the new key.

Start to finish, we were done well inside of half an hour. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause. I'll just say she saved a good chunk.

The part that stuck with me was when she said she'd been putting off getting a spare for two years because she assumed it would be a whole production. Sometimes the thing you're dreading is just a Tuesday afternoon call.
