🔧 PRO TIP
The 2016 Porsche 911 uses a car-shaped smart fob that looks like a novelty item but is a fully functional key with real electronics inside. The fob runs on a CR2032, which is common and easy to swap, but here is the thing owners miss: a dying battery on this system does not always throw a clean warning. The car may see the fob fine in the cabin but lose the passive entry range at the door handle first, so the touch-to-unlock stops responding before anything shows on the dash. If door handle unlock gets flaky but push-to-start still works once you are inside, swap the CR2032 first before calling it a dead fob or a sensor problem. Also, the fob has a mechanical blade tucked inside. There is a small release on the back. Pull that blade out and know where the physical lock cylinder is on your door before you ever need it. The time to learn that is not at midnight in a parking structure.

2016 Porsche 911 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Del Mar Village on a Tuesday morning. The owner had parked near the shops the evening before, and when she came back out, her 911 gave her a key-not-detected warning at the door. Push-to-start was dead. The fob looked fine, battery indicator on the dash said nothing useful, and she had no spare.

She told me another locksmith had programmed a replacement fob for her several months earlier. It worked. Then, gradually, it got worse. Short range first, then intermittent starts, and now this.

I got there with the car sitting in the lot, verified the fob battery was good, then pulled the diagnostic connector. The vehicle security system showed the fob was enrolled but the signal handshake was failing during the authentication cycle. What that usually means on this generation is that the key was programmed with a mismatch somewhere in the enrollment data, the kind of thing that passes on the first few cycles and then starts dropping out as the system does its full verification routine.

I programmed a correctly matched replacement fob on site. Clean enrollment, confirmed through three cold start cycles. Then I walked through all five buttons, passive entry on both front handles, and the mechanical blade fit in the door cylinder without resistance.

She asked if the dealer could have caught the original mismatch. Probably, if they had actually diagnosed it instead of just programming whatever fob was on the shelf. That is a separate conversation. What mattered that morning was that she drove away from Del Mar Village without a tow.

Porsche 911 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2016 Porsche 911?
The cheapest move is a mobile specialist who comes to you, because the dealer route on an all-keys-lost scenario adds up fast. You are looking at the key itself, extended labor for the reset procedure, and if the car is at your house or in a lot, you are also looking at a tow fee to get it to the dealership. That last part alone can set you back before the key work even starts. We handle all-keys-lost on site. The process requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port, the vehicle security system gets cleared of all previously registered fobs, and then new keys are enrolled from scratch. The car does not need to move. If you can get two keys done in the same session, do it, because the bulk of the time and setup cost is in that first key, and adding a second while we are already connected is significantly more efficient than scheduling a second visit later.
Can you delete lost or stolen keys from my 911 so they no longer start the car?
Does my 2016 Porsche 911 smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?
My 911 fob starts the car but the passive entry at the door handles stopped responding. Is the fob failing?
I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 911. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?
