Does my 2016 Porsche 911 smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There is a small mechanical release on the back of the fob. Press it and the blade slides out.

The physical lock cylinder on the 911 is behind a cover at the driver door handle. Pop that cover off, insert the blade, and you can get in even if the fob electronics are completely dead. Most owners never locate that cylinder until they need it, so find it once while everything is working. The blade also fits the ignition cylinder if you ever need it there.

My 911 fob starts the car but the passive entry at the door handles stopped responding. Is the fob failing?

Not necessarily. On this system, the passive entry antennas in the door handles operate on a different signal path than the ignition authorization. It is entirely possible for the fob to communicate well enough to authorize a start once you are in the car, while the exterior handle antennas are not picking it up reliably at range.

First thing to check is the fob battery. A CR2032 that is low but not dead will often drop passive entry range before it affects anything else. Swap the battery with a fresh one, not a discounted bulk cell, and retest both handles.

If a fresh battery does not fix it and the problem stays isolated to one handle, that points to the door-side antenna or wiring rather than the fob. If both handles are dead but start still works, the fob or its signal output is the more likely source. Either way, it is diagnosable on site without a trip to the dealer.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 911. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for the 911 smart key system. No ignition turn sequence, no button combination, nothing you can do in the driver seat. Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle.

The fob you bought online is probably fine as a blank, assuming it matches the factory identifier for your car. But it is just a paperweight until it is enrolled through the proper procedure. Bring it when you call and we can use it rather than sourcing a new one, which saves some time.
