There's a stretch on South Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach's Cedros Design District where the parking situation is tight and the cars sitting outside the boutiques and studios tend to be interesting. That's where I got the call.
An independent Porsche shop a few blocks over had a 2003 911 in the bay with the suspension disassembled. One of the techs had the customer's only key in his pocket when he stepped out to grab a part, and somewhere between the parts counter and walking back through the shop, the key disappeared. Not in the drain, not under the lift. Just gone. The customer was expected back in under three hours and the car wasn't drivable without a key.
I pulled up, confirmed the year and model, and got to work through the OBD port reading the immobilizer data. On this generation 911, the process is methodical but not exotic. Read the PIN, generate and program the replacement transponder, cut the blade to match the locks. The remote had to be enrolled separately, and I tested every function before I called it done.
Start to finish, about 35 minutes. The suspension went back together, the car came off the lift, and the customer picked it up on time with a working key in hand. The shop owner was relieved. He mentioned the dealer would have taken at least a couple of days and charged considerably more. That part was almost an afterthought for him. He just needed the problem solved that afternoon.
