Out near The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe, a guy texted me a GPS pin from what looked like a fire road turnout. He had been hiking and came back to his 2004 Scion XB with nothing. Key was gone, somewhere on the trail. No spare at home, no dealer nearby willing to dispatch, and no tow truck capable of navigating that road even if he wanted to wait.

I decoded the lock on-site and cut a replacement blade to match. Then I handled the transponder enrollment so the immobilizer would recognize the new key and actually let the engine run. After that, the remote fob got programmed to the car so his lock and unlock buttons worked again. He watched the whole thing happen on the hood of his car in that dirt pullout.
When the XB started, he just stood there for a second. I think he half expected it not to. It did.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus parts plus labor time. He saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and his car never had to move from the spot he left it.
