2015 Scion XB Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A shop over near Fletcher Cove called me on a Tuesday. A customer had brought his 2015 Scion XB in for a brake job at a Meineke, and while it was there the shop arranged a locksmith to cut a replacement key. The locksmith attempted the programming, hit an immobilizer fault mid-cycle, and walked. Told the shop the ECU was probably bad. The car would not start. The customer was hours into his day and had nowhere to be.
The shop called me as their second option.
I pulled up and the car was exactly what the description suggested: cranked but would not fire, and the immobilizer was holding a fault that was blocking any new key registration attempt. The previous attempt had interrupted mid-cycle and left the system in a locked state. An OBD-only tool was just going to bounce off it.
I pulled the ECU. Read the EEPROM with my bench tool, cleared the fault at the chip level, and wrote it back clean. Then I registered a fresh remote head key from scratch. The factory fob ID matched the original spec for this vehicle. First attempt after the reset, the immobilizer accepted it.
I put the ECU back, started the car, cycled the remote functions door by door, and walked the Meineke guys through what had gone wrong. An interrupted programming cycle is recoverable. The ECU was never bad. The previous locksmith just did not have the tooling to finish what they started.
Total time on site was about 75 minutes including pulling and reinstalling the ECU. The customer's alternative was a flatbed to the Toyota dealer, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have been considerably more. He saved a good chunk and drove home the same afternoon.
I carry bench tools for exactly this situation. Sometimes the OBD path is fine. When it is not, you need the next layer down.
