2008 Scion XB
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know if a replacement fob I bought online will actually work for my 2008 XB?

Check the factory FCC ID printed on the back of the fob against what's on your original. If they match, the hardware should be compatible. That part you can verify yourself before spending anything. What you can't skip is programming. A matching blank still needs to be registered to your car's immobilizer through the OBD port. There's no button sequence or ignition trick that handles this on the 2008 XB.

Q: How fast can you get to the Santee Lakes Area?

Typical arrival is 15 to 25 minutes. Call in, I dispatch to you directly. No appointment window, no days-out scheduling. If you're calling now, I'm moving now.

Q: I have a spare fob for my 2008 XB but it won't start the car. The remote buttons work fine. What's going on?

This is a common split-symptom situation with remote head keys. The remote side and the transponder side are two separate functions in the same unit. A fob can lock and unlock your doors all day long and still not be registered to the immobilizer, which is what actually allows the engine to start.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2008 Scion XB myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2008 XB remote head key requires OBD programming equipment to register the transponder to the immobilizer. There's no onboard add-a-key sequence you can run from the ignition. If you see a YouTube video suggesting an ignition-turn trick for this car, that applies to a different key type on a different vehicle. Bring the right tool or call someone who has it.

2008 Scion XB Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near Santee Lakes Area, a college student had been sitting on his parents' advice to get a spare key for his 2008 Scion XB for the better part of a year. Not because he didn't want one. Just because actually doing it meant driving out to a Toyota dealer, waiting around, and losing a morning he didn't have to spare with a noon class on the calendar.

He called me instead. I was already in Santee.

His original remote head key was worn but working, which made the job cleaner. I decoded the key blade at the lock, cut a fresh blade to match, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to register the new fob to the immobilizer. Tested the transponder, confirmed the engine started clean, then walked all three buttons until I was satisfied the remote side was synced up right.

Before I packed up, I showed him the CR2016 battery inside and how to swap it when range starts dropping. That part takes two minutes and costs almost nothing. He didn't know that battery was even in there.

He made his class. Didn't drive anywhere. The dealer had quoted him nearly double for a single key. He got two keys and never left the driveway.

Scion XB Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2008 Scion XB remote head key use?▼

CR2016. Not the thicker CR2032 that works in a lot of other fobs. The two look almost identical on a shelf, but the 2016 is noticeably thinner and they're not interchangeable in this fob. A 2032 won't seat right and you'll get intermittent contact issues that feel like a bigger problem than they are. Every remote head key I make for this car goes out with a fresh CR2016 already inside.
