The CSUSM area garage call came in late on a Monday. A student walked out of his night class, hit the button, nothing. Doors locked. Spare key sitting at home about 40 minutes south. Dealer's earliest opening was Thursday. It was 9 PM.

Getting the door open was the first step. Once inside, I pulled the key housing apart on the center console and looked at the remote board under a light before I even touched the OBD port. The solder joint on the board had a visible crack, the kind that happens when a key hits pavement just right. Electrically it looked connected. Functionally it wasn't.
I swapped in a fresh remote board, seated the CR2032, and verified the transponder side still read correctly on my programmer before locking anything in. Programmed the remote, cut the blade to match, walked the car: lock, unlock, alarm trigger, disarm. Everything behaved.
He drove home that same evening. The dealer would have had him waiting three days, plus whatever a tow from campus would have run. Getting the whole thing handled on-site, same night, for a fraction of what they wanted seemed to be the part that surprised him most.
