I was already in San Marcos on another job when the call came in. A couple near Richland had walked out of an arcade bar on a Friday night and the remote on their xB wasn't responding to anything. No locks, no panic, nothing. The car would still start because the transponder side of the key was working, but the remote functions were dead.
They were trying to figure out whether to leave the car overnight in a lot and deal with it over the weekend. One of them searched for a locksmith and called me instead.
I was about twelve minutes out and already had the right replacement shell and a fresh CR2016 in the van. When I pulled up I checked what they had: the original remote head key, worn button pads that had been pressing for years, and a battery reading low enough that the remote signal had basically given up.
We went through it on site. New battery, tested the remote functions, confirmed signal range, then verified the transponder was reading correctly before I closed it up. Car started clean on the first turn.
They drove home that night. The dealer route would have meant leaving the xB in a lot over a weekend, waiting for a Monday appointment, and paying a good chunk more for the same result. When the parts are already in the van, a Friday night call isn't any different from a Tuesday morning one.
