2013 Scion XB Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was close to 8 pm on a weeknight in San Ysidro, over on the Beyer Blvd Corridor side of town. She was calling from the parking lot of an after-hours pediatric urgent care. Her toddler had a fever and she had a prescription to pick up before the pharmacy closed at nine. The XB wasn't starting.
The key was turning. The engine wasn't catching. She'd tried a few times already and was starting to panic a little, which is the reasonable response when you have a sick kid in the back seat and a closing-time deadline on medication.
The Toyota dealer was closed. She found me.
I got there and connected to the OBD port. The immobilizer wasn't recognizing the key at all. Pulled the key apart and found the transponder chip had cracked, most likely from a drop at some point. It wasn't transmitting anymore. The remote functions had probably been going in and out for a while before that, but she hadn't thought much of it. Now the chip was gone and the car wasn't going anywhere.
Cut and programmed a new remote head key on site. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first attempt. I walked the buttons with her watching, made sure lock, unlock, and the third button all responded before I handed it over.
From her first call to engine running was 42 minutes. She made the pharmacy.
I don't bring up the dealer much, but she asked on her way out. Nearest Toyota dealer that handles Scion keys, next-day appointment minimum, plus the tow since the car wasn't moving. I saved her that whole chain of problems on a night when the timeline actually mattered.
