A guy in the Bayside neighborhood of Imperial Beach reached out on a Tuesday night. He had one key for his 2013 Crosstrek, and it had been acting up for a few days -- he had to hold it close to the column and try two or three times before the car would start. That night it stopped working entirely. Not intermittent anymore. Just done.

The remote head key on this generation is a self-contained unit. The transponder chip is built right into the head of the key, same piece as the buttons. When I got there and inspected it, the key itself had some wear on the blade and the housing had a crack near the battery door -- enough that the battery contact was sitting slightly loose. I replaced the CR2032 properly seated, confirmed contact integrity, and then tested ignition response before going any further.
It started. Clean, first try.
We still cut him a proper spare on site, because one key on a ten-year-old vehicle in daily use is how you end up stranded again. He made his shift. The dealer never came up until he asked how much they would have charged -- and the answer made him laugh a little.
