2021 Subaru Crosstrek Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Near Kit Carson Park Area in Escondido, a traveling physical therapist called me about her 2021 Crosstrek.
The fob shell had cracked along the top loop where it hung on her keyring, the rubber buttons were wearing thin, and the whole thing felt like it was one hard drop away from falling apart. She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a full replacement key, no discussion of what was actually broken.
I pulled up to her driveway mid-morning. She had the fob out and handed it over almost apologetically, like she felt bad calling over something that looked minor. It didn't look minor to her wallet, though. Dealer pricing for a new smart key on these is not cheap, and she had been told there was no other way.
The electronics inside were completely fine. The transponder, the remote circuitry, the battery contacts, all of it in good shape. I transferred the internals into a fresh shell with matching button layout, seated a new CR2032, and verified every button for range and response. Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, the mechanical insert, the whole job.
She looked at the new shell and said it looked exactly like the original. That is the point. The dealer was going to charge her for parts she did not need.
