2017 Subaru Crosstrek
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why does my 2017 Crosstrek need it programmed?

A smart key is more than a remote. It carries a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you go to start the car. The immobilizer is looking for a specific encrypted signal from that chip. If it doesn't get the right answer, the engine will not run, or it starts and cuts out within seconds.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a 2017 Crosstrek key replacement?

Longer than most people expect. Subaru dealers typically order fobs by VIN, which means the part has to come in before they can even book the programming appointment. On Subaru owner forums, members consistently report multi-day waits for that step alone, and scheduling the actual appointment adds more time on top. For all-keys-lost situations, some dealers have sent security components out for reprogramming at a regional level, with owners reporting waits stretching close to two weeks for that specific scenario.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Crosstrek. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

We can program aftermarket fobs in most cases, but there is something to check first. The fob has to be compatible with the specific system on your 2017 Crosstrek. The factory FCC ID on the fob matters here. If the one you bought matches what your vehicle calls for, we pair it with no issues. If it doesn't, it won't register no matter what tool is used. Bring it along when you call.

Q: My 2017 Crosstrek key fob stopped working after I changed the battery. What went wrong?

This comes up more than you'd think. A few things to check right away. First, confirm the new CR2032 is oriented correctly. The positive face needs to sit against the right contact. It sounds obvious but it's easy to flip during a swap. Second, look at the battery contacts themselves. Prying the fob open with a coin instead of the correct slot can bend a contact just enough that the new battery isn't making a full connection.

2017 Subaru Crosstrek Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Granite Hills, over on one of those wide streets behind the shopping center on Campo Road, a woman flagged me down after I was already finishing a different call about two blocks away. Not how most jobs come in, but it happens.

She had a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek and one working key. Her husband had the second fob in his work bag and left for a week-long trip out of state. She wasn't locked out, she just wanted a spare made before she had to rely on a single key for that long. Smart thinking.

She told me the dealer quoted her a wait of several days just to get the fob ordered by VIN, then a separate appointment to program it. She didn't have that kind of time or patience.

I had the right fob in the van. The programming sequence on these goes through the diagnostic port, the vehicle's immobilizer registers the new fob, and then I walk every button to confirm. Lock, unlock, panic, remote rear gate release. All of it. Then I verify the push-button start sees the new key in the cabin and outside the driver door.

Start to finish it was under 45 minutes in her driveway. She texted her husband a photo of the new key on her keychain before I had even backed out.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and she didn't have to wait for parts or drive anywhere.

Subaru Crosstrek Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Subaru dealer to get a replacement smart key for my 2017 Crosstrek?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right Subaru-compatible programming tools can handle this at your location. The confusion comes from the fact that some general locksmiths skip Subaru smart key work entirely, so owners get turned away and assume the dealer is the only path. That is a tooling gap at certain shops, not a rule. We carry the equipment to register a new fob to the 2017 Crosstrek's immobilizer and cut a working key blade on site.
