I was parked near the Naval Base Area side of Coronado, finishing up another job, when the call came in. Guy's 2019 Crosstrek, visitor lot at his apartment complex. His only fob had cracked at the blade hinge, the plastic housing was splitting apart, and he could see it was going to fail completely before long. He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow the car in.
He didn't want to tow a car that still ran. That's when he found me.
When I got there, the fob was in bad shape. The crack had gone deep enough that the blade pivot had almost no support left. I decoded the lock mechanically, cut a new key blade to match, transferred over to a fresh fob housing, and ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port to pair the new smart key to his immobilizer. The whole job was done at his car, in the visitor lot, in under 40 minutes.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. No tow, no service writer, no sitting in a waiting room while someone tried to figure out who handles keys.
The part that stuck with me was after I finished. He looked at the new fob, pressed the buttons a couple times like he was double-checking it was real, and just said "that's it?" Yeah, that's it.
