The dealer pays for access to that system and rolls the cost into the job. Then there is labor, shop minimums, and whatever markup is applied to the key blank itself.

For a 2014 Crosstrek remote head key, you are looking at a physical key blank, the fob shell with its battery and buttons, the transponder chip inside, programming time, and the actual cutting of the blade. When a dealer quotes you a number that makes you do a double take, they are not necessarily lying about the work involved. But they are also not the only place that can do it. The fob portion runs on a CR2032 battery and handles the remote buttons. That part is separate from the transponder function. A dead fob battery kills your remote lock and unlock but does not affect starting. A bad or unprogrammed chip kills your ability to start the car even if the fob buttons work perfectly.

Both sides need to be right for the full key to do its job.

A few things cause this. The transponder chip inside the key head can fail, especially on older keys that have taken physical damage or gotten wet. The key can also lose its programming over time, though that is less common than a chip that has cracked or corroded. Sometimes the issue is on the vehicle side, with the receiver that reads the chip.

Do not assume the car has a bigger mechanical problem before you rule out the key. If it started fine earlier and nothing else changed, the key or the immobilizer circuit is where I look first. I can test that on site in Fallbrook without any guessing.

Can I just buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

For the remote functions only, some owners have had luck with onboard relearn sequences on older Subaru models. But the 2014 Crosstrek remote head key has a transponder chip that requires dedicated programming equipment to register to the vehicle. You cannot do that part at home.

If you buy a key online and it arrives uncut and unprogrammed, you still need someone with the right tools to cut the blade and enroll the transponder. The fob buttons are secondary. The part that lets the car start is what requires professional equipment. Buying the blank online is fine if you want to source your own key, but factor in that you will still need a locksmith to finish the job before it is usable.
