Out in San Pasqual Valley, the roads are long and cell service is spotty, and when someone's only key stops working out there, the situation gets uncomfortable fast.
The guy I drove out to meet had been staying at a vacation rental near the valley, and his Crosstrek's smart fob had gone quiet on him. No response from the door handles, no start. He'd done what most people do: pushed the buttons harder, held it closer to the car, changed nothing. Then he called the dealer. They told him to tow the vehicle in, they could work him in the following afternoon, and gave him a number that made him pause.
He found me online and called. I told him I could be there that evening.
I pulled up, and the first thing I did was check the fob battery. Not because I assumed it was the fix, but because that's the right place to start before connecting anything. The CR2032 was original. Four-year-old cell in a key that lived on a keychain. I swapped it before I even opened my laptop.
It didn't fix it. The fob was still not communicating. So I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the vehicle security system, and ran through the registration process for a new smart fob. The immobilizer needed the replacement fob enrolled through the diagnostic port, which is not a DIY sequence on this system. With the right equipment it's about twenty minutes of actual work.
I handed him back a working key, tested all four buttons, checked the door handle touch unlock on both sides, and made sure the emergency insert blade seated properly back in the housing. He drove out of the valley that night instead of the next afternoon.
The dealer comparison came up on its own. He mentioned what they quoted. I didn't ask. He said he saved a good chunk and kept his whole evening.
