2000 Toyota Celica
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 2000 Celica to the dealer for a new key?

No. Dealers will tell you the vehicle has to come in, and for this generation Toyota that often means a tow bill stacked on top of the key bill before anyone has touched your car. I come to you. The transponder programming and remote registration for the 2000 Celica are done through the OBD port, which I bring the equipment for. The car stays where it is. You save the tow cost and the wait.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and something showing ownership, typically your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb sticker on the Celica to confirm the correct key specs before I cut or program anything. That is the same standard a dealer follows. The difference is I verify it on site in a few minutes rather than asking you to mail documentation or wait on a callback from a parts department.

Q: My 2000 Celica starts fine with the key but the remote stopped working. Are they related?

On this generation Celica, the remote fob and the ignition transponder are independent systems. The fob controls door locks and trunk release through the body side of the car. The transponder in the key blade talks to the immobilizer at startup. One can fail without touching the other. If the car starts but the fob is dead, check the CR2032 first.

Q: I bought a used fob for my Celica. Can it be programmed, or do I need a new one?

A used fob can be programmed as long as it matches the correct application for your 2000 Celica. The factory FCC ID on the fob needs to match what the vehicle expects. If it does, I can register it to your car on site. If it doesn't match, no amount of programming makes it work. Before you buy one online, confirm the FCC ID against what's listed for this specific year and model.

2000 Toyota Celica Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off the main stretch in Otay Mesa West when the call came in. A woman had bought a replacement fob online for her 2000 Celica and couldn't figure out why it did nothing. The doors wouldn't respond. The trunk release button was dead. She'd already swapped the CR2032 twice.

The fob she bought was the right button count and looked right in her hand. The problem was it had never been registered to her car. A replacement remote for this generation Toyota doesn't just wake up and work. It has to be programmed to the body control side of the vehicle.

I pulled up to the parking structure during her lunch break. The programming sequence for the remote side on this generation is done through the diagnostic port, reads the vehicle's security data, and registers the new fob to it. The whole thing took less time than it took her to explain the situation to me.

After that I walked every button. Doors locked and unlocked cleanly. Trunk release fired on the first press. She tested it herself twice before I packed up.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her parts plus labor plus a fee she described as a "system access charge." The total was going to be more than the fob cost her online in the first place. Coming out to Otay Mesa West and handling it on site was a fraction of what they wanted, and she kept her lunch break.

Toyota Celica Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come directly to wherever you and the Celica are in Otay Mesa or the Otay Mesa West area. The 2000 Celica uses a separate remote fob and a transponder ignition key, so a lockout situation and a key replacement are both things I handle on site. You do not need a tow, you do not need to arrange a drop-off, and you do not need to sit in a dealer waiting room.
