A guy in Downtown Lemon Grove called on a Tuesday afternoon. He had a 2003 Celica, one working key, and a remote that had stopped responding about a month prior. He'd been manually unlocking ever since and finally got tired of it. He called the dealer first. They gave him a number that made him pause, then he found me.
I pulled up to his building, and he met me outside. The Celica was parked right there in the lot, which made the whole job cleaner. He wanted a spare key cut and programmed, and he wanted the remote situation sorted out.
I looked at his existing fob first. The CR2032 was original -- 2003 original. Not low. Gone. Swapped it out, tested range. Better, but the lock button was inconsistent. The fob housing had taken some wear and the button contact pad under the lock button was soft. His existing remote was just worn out.
I had a replacement fob with the right button count. Cut the blade to his lock, programmed the transponder, and registered the remote through the OBD port. The whole visit was under 45 minutes. He got a working spare key and a working remote, standing in his own parking lot.
He mentioned the dealer quote again while I was packing up. I just told him he saved a good chunk and left it at that.
