She was parked on a side street off La Mesa Village, right in that stretch where the older bungalows meet the coffee shops. The Celica was locked and running fine, she said, but the fob had basically stopped working unless she pressed it against the door handle. Range had dropped to almost nothing over about two months.
She had already bought a replacement fob online. Had the factory FCC ID marked on the back, matching her original. Good move on the sourcing. What she did not know was that a replacement remote for this generation still needs to be enrolled to the vehicle. You cannot just swap it in and walk away.
I met her at the car. The original fob had a hairline crack along the battery door edge and the CR2032 inside had a faint white crust on one terminal. I cleaned it, reseated it, and the original came back to about half its range. That told me the board was not dead, just starved.
We still did the enrollment on both fobs, the original and the new one, so she had a working spare. The Celica uses an onboard relearn sequence for the remote, no scan tool needed for the remote functions on this generation, which is one of the things I appreciate about this era of Toyota. Turn the key, follow the sequence, fobs enrolled.
The whole call was maybe forty minutes, most of that just talking through what had happened. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her for a full key replacement including cutting a new blade, even though her existing blade was fine. The remote was the only issue. It costs a lot less when you are only fixing what is actually broken.
