A guy over in Winter Gardens, Lakeside had just bought a used 2004 Celica off Craigslist. Good car, fair deal, one key. The seller handed it over and told him to sort out a spare on his own. He figured a hardware store could handle it.
Hardware stores can cut a key blade. They cannot do anything about the transponder chip inside the head of a Celica remote. Without the chip being enrolled to the car's immobilizer, the engine will crank and immediately stall, every single time. He learned that after the hardware store cut him a key that fit the ignition perfectly and started nothing.
He called the dealer. The number they gave him was enough to make him pause, and then he called me instead.
I met him at his place. The original remote was still working, which meant I could proceed as an add-a-key rather than an all-keys-lost job. I used my programmer to enroll the chip on the new unit to the car, then ran the remote sync sequence so the lock and unlock buttons responded. Cut the blade to match on my machine. Tested everything: start, lock, unlock, trunk release.
He ended up with two fully working keys for well under what the dealer quoted for one. And now if something happens to one of them, he's back to an add-a-key situation instead of staring down the much harder all-keys-lost job.
