Out in Bostonia, just off a side street near the east end of El Cajon, I got a call from a college student who'd bought a 2003 Volkswagen Golf off Craigslist the previous semester. One key, no spare, and she'd been meaning to get a copy made ever since. She never did.
The hinge on the flip key finally gave out during a long day. The blade separated from the remote housing mid-use, one half in her hand and the blade stuck in the door lock cylinder. She was standing next to a car she couldn't drive and holding what looked like two pieces of scrap plastic.

Both shells were fresh, both blades cut to match, both chips programmed and verified at the ignition. She watched the whole thing from about three feet away.
Forty minutes start to finish. Two working keys instead of zero. She asked about the dealer afterward, more out of curiosity than anything. When I told her what the dealer route typically looks like in time and cost, she just said she was glad she called first. That part I hear a lot.
