Over in Eden Gardens, a guy had been nursing his 2017 Golf ignition for about a month. He was a mechanic by trade, had his own independent shop in Solana Beach. Transmissions, brakes, engine work, no problem. But the ignition was giving him a fight and he knew enough to know that wafer locks are a different specialty.
The key was catching on the way out. Not every time, but often enough that he was wiggling it loose instead of pulling it clean. He figured the cylinder was toast and started pricing dealer work. The number they gave him covered a new cylinder, a new key, and the reprogramming labor. He was about a day away from booking it.
Then he decided a locksmith made more sense.
I looked at the cylinder before touching anything. The wear pattern was inside, on the wafers, not the cylinder body itself. The wafers had rounded off from use, probably accelerated by a keychain with some weight on it. The cylinder housing was still serviceable. I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key blade matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I paired the remote side of his flip key back to the vehicle using the programming equipment I carry in the van.
He asked to see the old wafers. I showed him. You could see exactly where they had gone soft.
The ignition turns clean now. Dealer never got that call.
