Over in Montgomery, a nurse had just bought her first car off Facebook Marketplace. A used 2012 Volkswagen Golf, decent shape, fair price. One key. The seller kept saying the second one was somewhere in the house. It never turned up.
She called the VW dealer and got a number that made her stomach drop. She had just put money down on the car and paid her first insurance premium. I had her test all four buttons herself, then start the car with the new key, then with the original. Both worked clean.
I also walked her through one thing dealers rarely mention: if she ever loses both keys, the job gets more involved and more expensive because the immobilizer has to be handled differently with no working reference key. Having that spare she was holding wasn't just a convenience. It was insurance on the car she just bought.
She drove home with two working keys and kept a good chunk of what the dealer would have taken.
