Out in Bressi Ranch, a woman flagged me down in her own driveway. She had a 2013 Golf and a key that looked like it had been through something. The flip hinge had given out, the blade was hanging loose at an angle, and the shell had a crack running up the side from what she guessed was being dropped on concrete one too many times.

I pulled the board and chip out of her old shell right there on the hood. Both looked clean. No corrosion, no broken contacts. I transferred everything into a fresh housing, seated the CR2032 correctly, and verified all four buttons were registering. Then I decoded the blade from the original key and cut a replacement blade to match.
She watched the whole thing, which I like. Seeing the circuit board come out intact and go right back into a working key tends to land differently than just handing someone a finished product. She understood exactly what she had paid for and what she had not paid for.
The dealer route would have replaced parts that had no business being replaced.
