I got a call from a guy in Buena Creek who had been driving his 2009 Volkswagen Golf on a single key for two years. He knew he should have a spare but kept putting it off. Then the one key he had started acting up: remote buttons unreliable, engine starting fine, but the lock and unlock range had dropped to about two feet. He figured the battery was dead, swapped it himself with a fresh CR2032, and it helped for about a week before going intermittent again.

Then I did what I always do before I call a job done: walked every button, locked and unlocked from distance, cycled the ignition a few times and watched the security indicator. Everything came back clean.
He asked about the dealer at the end, almost as an afterthought. I told him what they typically charge for this car. He got quiet for a second and said he wished he'd called two years ago when he first thought about getting a spare.
That's the part of the job I like. Not the dramatic lockout, just the guy who finally stops putting it off.
