2009 Volkswagen Golf
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2009 Volkswagen Golf Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Buena Creek who had been driving his 2009 Volkswagen Golf on a single key for two years. He knew he should have a spare but kept putting it off.

Then the one key he had started acting up: remote buttons unreliable, engine starting fine, but the lock and unlock range had dropped to about two feet. He figured the battery was dead, swapped it himself with a fresh CR2032, and it helped for about a week before going intermittent again.

When he called me he was parked in his driveway, engine running, afraid to shut it off.

I came out that evening. He did have a fresh CR2032 seated correctly, so the battery wasn't the culprit this time. The remote circuit in the fob itself was failing. The flip key blade was also worn enough that I wanted to verify it was still being read cleanly by the ignition.

I cut a new key blade to his vehicle, transferred and confirmed chip function with my programmer, and registered the remote. Then I did what I always do before I call a job done: walked every button, locked and unlocked from distance, cycled the ignition a few times and watched the security indicator. Everything came back clean.

He asked about the dealer at the end, almost as an afterthought. I told him what they typically charge for this car. He got quiet for a second and said he wished he'd called two years ago when he first thought about getting a spare.

That's the part of the job I like. Not the dramatic lockout, just the guy who finally stops putting it off.
