Out near the Torrey Pines trailhead on a Saturday, a guy had been out hiking and came back to his 2004 Golf sitting in the dirt lot with a dead fob. Not lost, just dead. He had his key, he got in, the car started fine. But the remote did absolutely nothing. No lock, no unlock, no response from any of the four buttons. He had been living with it for a few weeks, honestly, but now he was forty minutes from home and just wanted it sorted.
He found me, I drove out to Del Mar, and we started with the CR2032. Fresh cell, correct polarity, case snapped back clean. He stood there watching me walk the buttons one by one against the car. Nothing.
That told me the battery was never the issue. I opened the fob housing and looked at the circuit board. The solder connection on one of the button contacts was cracked, the kind of hairline break you get from years of the key riding hard in a pocket and flexing every time someone squeezes the fob. Invisible until you look at it under the right angle of light.
We went with a fresh replacement fob shell and remote board, cut the blade to match his existing door lock, and ran the remote synchronization sequence to pair it to the car. Transponder was already good, so the car kept starting without a hitch throughout.
The buttons worked on the first press after sync. He clicked lock twice, watched the mirrors fold, and that was that. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a new key assembly and said he would need to leave the car there. We did it in the lot where he parked.
